TweetMyMac while still in beta is a free app for your Mac that will let you remotely control your machine from anywhere with your tweets.
TweetMyMac will let you take screenshots, shutdown your computer, capture iSight images and many more commands. You just have to send a DM to one of your special Twiter account that is configured with TweetMyMac and the application will scan any incoming DMs and execute commands accordingly.
Here is how it works
- Sign up for a new Twitter account (I named mine akmalw). It is also a good idea to protect the updates on this account in case you don’t want others to be able to see the information it will send you, such as screenshots or iSight captures.
- Setup your newly made account to follow your normal account.
- Open TweetMyMac and enter the details for the newly made special account.
- To control your Mac, send a direct message from your normal account to the special account with a command. (list of commands at the bottom).
Important: You should note that anybody you follow with your special account will be able to control your Mac, because they will be able to DM you. In most cases you should only follow your normal account, or only the people you really really trust and want them to control your Mac.
Here are some handy commands:
Shutdown – in the form “DM akmalw shutdown”. This will shutdown your Mac remotely.
Screenshot – in the form “DM akmalw screenshot”. This will take a screenshot of your Mac’s screen, upload the photo to TwitPic and send you the link. Nice, eh?
Say [Phrase] – in the form “DM akmalw say test message”. This will make your Mac say “test message”.
Torrent [torrent URL] – in the form “DM akmalw http://www.torrent.com/torrenturl”. This will download the torrent from the link specified and open it in your torrent client.
See a list of full commands here.
Keep in mind that the application is still in beta, so you should expect it to have a few bugs. In my tests I was able to get a screenshot, make my Mac say something and log off. However, I couldn’t get it to capture an iSight photo. For some reason it was just freezing my camera.
P.S. You can configure your Twitter account with your cell phone, this will allow you to control your Mac with SMS.
